Members might also want to check their User Control Panel (UCP) settings for Edit posting defaults which has controls for whether or not BBCode, smilies, signatures and reply notifications are enabled or disabled.
I'd also like to point out that some members may turn off those settings because they don't understand what they do. I suggest leaving them on (what they're set to when you create the account):

Enable BBCode by default: Yes

Allows you to use the text formatting, quote posts, lists, etc. in your post. IOW, the buttons at the top of the post editing area. Also, to quote a post.

Enable smilies by default: Yes

Allows you to use the "Smilies" seen in the post edit area, like this one. :)

Attach my signature by default: Yes

Every time you make a post, your signature is added to the bottom of the post. If you set this to "No", your signature won't appear in the post.

 If you have signatures turned off (set to No), turning them back on later (set to Yes) won't make your signature appear in those earlier posts.

My signature looks like:
Wiki To some, the glass is half full. To others, the glass is half empty. To an engineer, it's twice the size it needs to be.
